How much do you have to pay up front before you get paid?

The Erasmus+ grant usually arrives weeks after you have paid the deposit, the first month and the journey. Fill in your details and you will see when money goes out and when it comes in, and the lowest point of your balance.

Since the 2025 call all students receive travel support based on the distance to their destination, higher if they travel there and back by train, bus or car-sharing (and then up to 6 extra days of support). Table from the Programme Guide 2026.

Other costs

We have no verified cost of living by city. Do your own sums; this is what moves the curve most.

In 2018, the "Erasmus" policies sold in Spain cost around €400 a year on average (liability, medical assistance and luggage). As a recent reference, the insurance offered by UCM costs €232.50 for up to 365 days (2025). The European Health Insurance Card does not cover repatriation or liability. In Germany, for example, the semester fee including the transport ticket is a compulsory payment on arrival.

How much is the Erasmus+ grant in 2026-27?

The monthly grant depends on two things: the cost-of-living group of your country and that of the country you go to. The Programme Guide sets three bands and each National Agency chooses its amount within them; for traineeships you get €150 more a month and, with the fewer opportunities top-up, €250 more.

BandPer month (studies)
You go to a more expensive country than yours€348 to €674
You go to a country in the same group€292 to €606
You go to a cheaper country€225 to €550

How to read this calculation

The amounts

The grant depends on the jump between the cost-of-living group of the home country and that of the destination: high band if you go to a more expensive country, medium if it is similar and low if it is cheaper. Each National Agency sets its amounts within these ranges, and may let each university choose within a narrower range.

When the money arrives

62.7% received the Erasmus+ grant only after leaving. Of those leaving Spain, only 11.6% are paid before they go. Each university decides when it pays the advance payment: the planner uses an assumption and explains it in each line.

When you finish you get the invitation to the participant report (EU Survey): you have 30 days to send it, it counts as your request for the balance, and the university has 45 days to pay it.

What the grant doesn't cover

The Erasmus grant is not meant to cover the whole stay (UPV). According to ESNsurvey XV, the average grant was €468 a month against an average cost of living of about €790, and housing and essential expenses take up 72.71% of the budget.

The deposit refund is not in the curve: there is no data on how long it takes.
