Europe

What you get depends on the country you leave from

The European Union sets ranges and each National Agency decides its amount within them. That is why two students going to the same university in Bologna can get very different amounts, and get them at very different times.

Work out your case from any countrySee the grant by destination country

Three groups of countries and three bands

The grant depends on the jump between the cost-of-living group of the home country and that of the destination: high band if you go to a more expensive country, medium if it is similar and low if it is cheaper. Each National Agency sets its amounts within these ranges, and may let each university choose within a narrower range.

BandWhen it appliesRange per month
HighYou go to a country in a more expensive group€348 to €674
MediumYou go to a country in the same group€292 to €606
LowYou go to a country in a cheaper group€225 to €550
  • Group 1, highest cost of living: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
  • Group 2, medium cost: Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain.
  • Group 3, lowest cost: Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Türkiye.

Across the programme you get €250 more a month if you have fewer opportunities (each country decides who qualifies) and €150 more a month on a traineeship.

If your country isn't in the table, the planner uses the European minimum for each band and tells you so.

When it is paid, by country

Percentage of students who received the grant before leaving. Across Europe, 37.3%; 36.8% received it within 30 days of arriving and 25.9% later.

  • Denmark71.2%
  • Germany36.3%
  • Italy20.5%
  • Spain11.6%
  • European average37.3%

The survey only breaks down these sending countries. Among those leaving Spain, 64.1% are paid more than 30 days after arriving.

National grants you take with you

On top of the Erasmus+ grant, many countries keep paying your student grant or loan when you go abroad. What changes most is when it arrives: in Norway, before you leave; in Sweden, on the first day of the semester; in Italy, the regional grant from Emilia-Romagna, months later. In Spain, the top-up depends on your autonomous community (Spanish region), and the planner adds it.
